VAGRANT SERIES

This series centres itself upon two matters of social engagement; how us humans perceive one another in any given environment or situation and the ever-increasing lack of social interaction, not just between segregated groups but also as the society as a whole.

The ‘Vagrant Series’ concept is to expose society’s changeable attitude to the subjects on show due to them being exhibited in a gallery situation. Vagrants in society are widely ignored and avoided in their expected ground, so by relocating them into a different – and apparently more socially accepted – environment like an exhibition, it will therefore intentionally highlight society’s change of view on the subject.

The idea behind presenting these individuals is not to outwardly expose society ignoring them outside an exhibition but to present this broader concept of society’s mutable perception. Society’s view changes with its environment. Rather than ignoring these individuals, which are now given exhibition time and space, they are given a heighted sense of being and thus recognition. The art world and its instrument of theatre, such as the exhibition or gallery, are seen by society with an elevated eye. These photographs aim to challenge that elevated perception.
